NCDOT Hosting Public Workshop Regarding Proposed Highway 64 Corridor

Monday, May 19th,  from 5-8 pm at Apex High School

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has been conducting a study to determine the best transition of Highway 64 from a highway to a freeway and  expressway between Cary and Pittsboro. Dianne Khin, planning director for the Town of Apex, has sent the following message to Apex residents:

NCDOT is hosting a public workshop for the US 64 corridor study (Phase 2A) on Monday, May 19th from 5-8 p.m. at Apex High School. You may already be on their mailing list, but if not, please consider attending this comment session with as many neighbors as you can to voice your opinion regarding NCDOT's plan to make US 64 a freeway from US 1 in Cary through Pittsboro.

In their previous Phase 1 study, the plan was to make US 64 a freeway (limited access with interchanges) west of I-540. US 64 east of I-540 was planned to be a superstreet or expressway with some direct road and driveway access to US 64. At the public workshop on May 19th, Option 1 is closest to the proposed solution that came out of their Phase 1 study. Their new Options 2 and 3 are for freeway facilities all along US 64. Option 3 is the most ambitious with a 10 lane road section (freeway lanes plus frontage roads)—this optiion will remove vegetative buffers along the corridor and have a look similar to Independence Boulevard in Charlotte.

You can go to NCDOT's website at: http://www.ncdot.org/doh/preconstruct/tpb/SHC/studies/US64/Public to get more information, provide comments, and to sign up for future mailings.
